Man and Van Chelsea Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van Chelsea is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and transportation activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety in all aspects of our man and van and removal services.

Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures. Health and safety is an integral part of our operational planning and decision making.

Management Responsibility and Commitment

The management of Man and Van Chelsea accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance within the business. We are committed to complying with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice as it applies to removal and transport operations.

Management will ensure that adequate resources, information, instruction, supervision and training are provided to enable employees to work safely and without risk to health. This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as needed to reflect changes in legislation, working practices and the scale of our operations.

Employee Responsibilities

Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions while at work. All staff must:

Follow company safety procedures and safe systems of work at all times; use the equipment and personal protective equipment provided; report hazards, near misses, accidents and unsafe conditions promptly; co-operate with management in implementing this policy and any related safety arrangements; and attend training and safety briefings as required.

Failure to follow health and safety rules may result in disciplinary action and, where appropriate, may be reported to the relevant authorities.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

We will identify and assess risks arising from our work activities, including loading, unloading, lifting and carrying items, driving and vehicle operations, working on customer premises, and handling heavy or awkward objects. Suitable control measures will be implemented to reduce risks to a level that is as low as reasonably practicable.

For each job, staff are required to consider the specific risks presented by the property, access routes, parking arrangements, traffic conditions, and the nature and size of items being moved. Where necessary, a site-specific assessment will be carried out and appropriate methods agreed before work begins.

Manual Handling and Lifting Practices

Manual handling is a significant part of our removal services. To minimise the risk of injury, we will:

Provide training on safe lifting techniques, team lifting and use of mechanical aids such as trolleys and platforms; plan lifts in advance, especially for large, heavy or awkward items; avoid unnecessary manual handling by using suitable equipment wherever possible; and require staff to work in teams for items that cannot be safely handled by one person.

Employees must not attempt to lift or move any item they believe may cause injury or is beyond their physical capability. Any such situations must be reported to management so that alternative methods can be arranged.

Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards

Our vehicles are central to our removals and man and van services, and their safe operation is a priority. We will ensure that all vehicles used for work are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition and are regularly inspected.

Drivers must hold the appropriate valid licence for the vehicle they operate, follow all traffic and parking regulations, conduct basic vehicle checks before use, and report any defects or incidents without delay. Drivers must not operate vehicles under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that impairs their ability to drive, and must follow company guidance on load security and weight limits.

Safe Loading, Unloading and Use of Equipment

Loading and unloading will be carried out in a controlled and safe manner, with particular attention to preventing falls, crush injuries and damage to property. Loads must be secured to prevent movement during transit and to avoid risks when doors are opened.

Any lifting aids or equipment supplied by the company will be used only by trained personnel and in accordance with the instructions provided. Equipment must be inspected before use and taken out of service if found to be damaged or defective.

Customer and Public Safety

We recognise our duty to safeguard the health and safety of customers, visitors and members of the public during our operations. Our teams will plan work to minimise disruption and risk, particularly in shared areas, on public highways and around entrances and exits.

Where necessary, we will establish safe working areas, restrict access to hazardous zones and use appropriate warning signs or verbal instructions. Staff must behave in a professional manner at all times and must not leave unattended hazards such as unsecured items, open vehicle ramps or trailing cables.

Work Environment and Welfare

We will provide suitable welfare arrangements for our employees, including access to drinking water, rest breaks and appropriate facilities when reasonably practicable during longer jobs. Staff are encouraged to raise any concerns about fatigue, stress, or physical strain so that workloads and schedules can be managed appropriately.

Where work takes place in challenging environments, such as confined spaces, cluttered properties or locations with poor access, staff must take extra care and follow any additional safety instructions provided.

Training, Information and Supervision

All employees will receive appropriate induction training on our health and safety arrangements, safe working procedures and emergency arrangements. Additional role-specific training will be provided for drivers, team leaders and those using specialist equipment.

Information about hazards and safe working practices will be communicated through briefings and job instructions. Supervisors are responsible for monitoring compliance with this policy on a day-to-day basis and for addressing any unsafe behaviour or conditions.

Accidents, Incidents and Near Miss Reporting

All accidents, injuries, incidents and near misses that occur during work must be reported as soon as possible. We will investigate these events to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Records of accidents and incidents will be maintained and reviewed periodically to monitor trends and improve our safety performance.

Emergency Procedures

Emergency arrangements will be in place for foreseeable situations, including vehicle accidents, fire, serious injury and sudden illness during a job. Employees will be briefed on how to raise the alarm, contact emergency services and respond to instructions from the emergency services.

First aid provisions will be maintained as appropriate to the size and nature of our operations. Staff must familiarise themselves with the location of first aid kits and follow company procedures for dealing with injuries.

Policy Review and Continuous Improvement

This Health and Safety Policy reflects the current organisational structure and scope of services provided by Man and Van Chelsea. It will be reviewed at regular intervals and whenever there are significant changes in our operations or relevant legislation.

We aim for continuous improvement in health and safety performance by learning from experience, responding to feedback from employees and customers, and updating our practices in line with industry developments.

All employees and contractors working with Man and Van Chelsea are required to comply with this policy and to contribute actively to creating a safe working environment for everyone involved in our moving and transport services.
